What Sacramento agencies require from a certified translation

State agencies apply their own version of it. A driving licence issued in a language other than English must reach the California DMV with a certified translation or an affidavit of translation into English attached. Getting the Sacramento County record first

A lot of enquiries arrive before the person has the certified copy at all, and translating a plain photocopy usually means ordering the job twice. Sacramento County publishes its process in more detail than most, so it is worth following exactly.

The Sacramento County Clerk/Recorder issues birth certificates for births registered in the county since 1850, at $34 per copy, and a newborn's certificate becomes available about four weeks after the birth date. Over the counter, staff ask for a completed application and allow roughly twenty minutes from payment to certificate. By post it is five to seven business days, and the sworn statement on page two has to be notarized first if you want an authorized copy. Fax and online orders run on the same five-to-seven-day clock, with two business days for expedited handling and a $19 charge for the faster delivery. There are also extended hours on Thursday evenings, five until eight, specifically for certified birth, death and marriage copies — useful if you work days.

State law forces every California office to offer two versions. The authorized copy establishes the identity of the person named. The informational copy is certified too, but carries the printed line "INFORMATIONAL, NOT A VALID DOCUMENT TO ESTABLISH IDENTITY" across its face, which makes it useless for a petition or a DMV appointment. People order it by mistake because it is the easier one to get.

Records can also come from CDPH Vital Records at state level, where a certified birth copy is $31 following the fee increase Assembly Bill 64 brought in on 1 January 2026. County and state amounts are not the same, so check the office you are actually using. Apostilles, if the receiving country wants one, are issued by the California Secretary of State — not by us, and not by any translation company.
